Instructions for New CS Department Servers

IMPORTANT: You must be logged in via the VPN to access your files on the CS servers while not on the “Tsunami” network

Steps to access your files on the CS servers:

Enable Samba
Mount a Samba Share
Connecting to your files (ssh)
VPN Instructions

Enable Samba

  • This only needs to be done once
  • Use your BroncoNet Id and Password to ssh in to each of the following servers one time:
    • login01.cs.wmich.edu
    • login02.cs.wmich.edu
    • login03.cs.wmich.edu
    • login04.cs.wmich.edu

Once you have done this, you can do everything (ssh, sftp, samba) through:

login.cs.wmich.edu

Connecting To Your Files (Mounting a Samba Share)

Windows
  • Go to Start->Computer and click the Map Network Drive button on the top bar
  • Use \\login.cs.wmich.edu\[BRONCONETID] for the Folder field.
  • On the Windows Security window, enter your BroncoNet ID and Password
    • Your BroncoNet ID and Password are the ones used on GoWMU
    • Ex. If your BroncoNet ID is abc1234 use \\login.cs.wmich.edu\abc1234
  • Your Samba share will now be mounter within My Computer under Network Drives

Mac
  • Open up a Finder window and press ⌘K
  • Use smb://login.cs.wmich.edu/[BRONCONETID] as the Server Address and click Connect
    • Your BroncoNet ID and Password are the ones used on GoWMU
    • Ex. If your BroncoNet ID is abc1234 use smb://login.cs.wmich.edu/abc1234
  • With Registered User selected, enter your BroncoNet ID and Password and click Connect

Linux
  • Create a directory to store your Samba Share
    • Ex. mkdir ~/sambaShare
  • Mount the share to the new directory using sudo mount -t cifs //login.cs.wmich.edu/[BRONCONETID] ~/sambaShare -o user=[BRONCONETID]
    • Your BroncoNet ID and Password are the ones used on GoWMU
    • Ex. If your BroncoNet ID is abc1234 use sudo mount -t cifs //login.cs.wmich.edu/abc1234 ~/sambaShare -o user=abc1234
  • You will then be prompted for the sudo password and then your BroncoNet Password (Nothing will be shown in the password field as you type)
  • Your files will now be mounted within ~/sambaShare

Connecting to your files (Terminal)

Mac/Linux
    • Open a terminal and use the ssh command
    • ssh [BRONCONETID]@login.cs.wmich.edu
      • Your BroncoNet ID and Password are the ones used on GoWMU
      • Ex. If your BroncoNet ID is abc1234 use ssh abc1234@login.cs.wmich.edu
    • Answer yes if you are prompted to continue connecting
    • Type in your BroncoNet Password and hit the enter key (nothing will be shown in the password field as you type)

Windows
  • Download putty.exe through PuTTY.org
  • Use [BRONCONETID]@login.cs.wmich.edu asa the Host Name
    • Your BroncoNet ID and Password are the ones used on GoWMU
    • Ex. If your BroncoNet ID is abc1234 use abc1234@login.cs.wmich.edu
  • Click Open
  • Click Yes if a PuTTY Security Alert window pops up
  • Type in your BroncoNet Password and hit the enter key (nothing will be shown in the password field as you type)

  • VPN is needed to access your files on the CS servers while not on the “Tsunami” network
  • Using your BroncoNet ID and Password login to the VPN
    • Your BroncoNet ID and Password are the ones used on GoWMU
